Oakridge, Oregon

Visitor Readiness Report

Located at the foot of the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains, Oakridge is completely surrounded by the Willamette National Forest and have nearly 500 miles of trails within an hour and a half. There are trails for every kind of outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, cross country skiing, and equestrian activities.

The Challenge

The positioning as “Oregon’s center for outdoor recreation’ did provide a competitive edge that the area can own. This is also claimed by many other Northwest locations that have much more highly developed capabilities – except in their capacity for mountain biking.

TDM Strategy

The VRR recommended actions to establish Oakridge as a mountain biking destination, and not generic outdoor recreation as it had been doing. This recommendation capitalized on the prospect of establishing an International Mountain Biking Association ride center, the Oakridge Community Trails Plan and the City’s active business and industry relocation efforts.

The recommended actions were created after research, site visits, and consultation with local stakeholders.
